While surety bonds have historically been used on public work, lenders are now frequently requiring them of general contractors, which means that major subcontractors are also being asked for bonds. This session will discuss the bond process and review what successful contractors know before providing a surety bond.

  • Mike Russell

    Mike Russell is the Surety Marketing Manager for Federated Insurance and Granite Re. Mike is responsible for integrating the surety products and services offered by Granite Re into the Federated business plan. Granite Re is an independent, wholly owned subsidiary of Federated Insurance, acquired in 2017.

    Mike has been with Federated for 32 years, holding various positions in the Marketing Department – including Marketing Development Trainee, Marketing Representative, Account Executive, District Marketing Manager, ARMS Field Manager, and National Account Executive.

    Mike is a nationally recognized author and speaker, and has consulted with hundreds of business owners and associations in the areas of safety, risk, and business management. Mike has also been instrumental in the establishment of numerous successful association insurance programs, focusing on value, service, and long-term relationships.

    Mike grew up on a farm in Madelia, MN and graduated from Winona State University in Winona, MN in 1984, and currently serves as Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees for WSU. Mike is an accomplished endurance athlete and has competed in some of the world’s most challenging races. He enjoys traveling and has visited 6 of the world’s 7 continents.
